Meet the Staff

John M. Cornwell, Ph.D.John M. Cornwell, Ph.D.:

On March 1, 2007, Rice University’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness was established with the addition of John M. Cornwell, Ph.D. as the new Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness. Dr. Cornwell spent five years at Loyola University New Orleans where he led the effort to achieve Loyola’s reaffirmation of accreditation in December 2006. He reports jointly to the Provost and the Vice President for Finance and holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology.

Dr. Cornwell received his PhD degree in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. He has held faculty positions at the University of Georgia in Athens and Tulane University in New Orleans. Before coming to Rice, Cornwell was Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment at Loyola University in New Orleans, where he was also a professor in the Department of Psychology. He taught courses on tests and measurements, statistics, I/O psychology and human-resource development.


Angela Powell Thompson, MBA, MSAngela Powell Thompson, MBA, MS:

In June 2011, Angela Thompson joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.  Angela previously worked at the University of Houston, where her responsibilities as a Coordinator included developing electronic surveys, analyzing data for SACS and AACSB accreditation reporting, and providing data for business program rankings.  She received her MBA from the University of Houston—Victoria in 2004 and a Master of Science in Management from Houston Baptist University in 2011.

As our Senior Survey Administrator, Angela serves as the technical expert to the university community in building, authoring, and deploying surveys and in analyzing and reporting survey results. She also serves as the university-wide survey manager for the web-based Qualtrics Survey Software and for all COFHE surveys. Angela can be reached at ext. 5377 or apt1@rice.edu.


Caroline Pendleton, BA

Caroline Pendleton, BA:

Caroline Pendleton joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in August 2014. Before coming to Rice, she worked for the Toulouse Graduate School at the University of North Texas, where she provided administrative support to the Associate Deans and oversaw professional development workshops for graduate students.

Caroline graduated with a BA in English from the University of North Texas, where she also took graduate coursework in Professional and Technical Communication. As Executive Assistant, Caroline works with John and Angela to document and articulate Rice’s endeavors to meet SACS COC’s Principles of Accreditation. She also schedules meetings, manages calendars and organizational charts, and maintains the website. Caroline can be reached at ext. 2064 or pendleton@rice.edu.
