Photo of John M. Cornwell, Ph.D.John M. Cornwell, Ph.d

John M. Cornwell, Ph.d joined Rice in March 2007 to lead Rice University’s newly established Office of Institutional Effectiveness. Effective July 1, 2018, John leads both the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and the Office of Institutional Research. Prior to joining Rice, Dr. Cornwell spent five years at Loyola University New Orleans where he led the effort to achieve Loyola’s reaffirmation of accreditation in December 2006. He reports jointly to the Provost and the Vice President for Finance and holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology.

Dr. Cornwell received his PhD degree in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. He has held faculty positions at the University of Georgia in Athens and Tulane University in New Orleans. Before coming to Rice, Cornwell was Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment at Loyola University in New Orleans, where he was also a professor in the Department of Psychology. He taught courses on tests and measurements, statistics, I/O psychology and human-resource development.

 

Photo of Angela Thompson Angela Powell Thompson, MBA, MS:

In June 2011, Angela Thompson joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.  Angela previously worked at the University of Houston, where her responsibilities as a Coordinator included developing electronic surveys, analyzing data for SACS and AACSB accreditation reporting, and providing data for business program rankings.  She received her BBA in Business Information Systems from Tennessee State University in 2001, MBA from the University of Houston – Victoria in 2004, and a Master of Science in Management from Houston Baptist University in 2011.

As our Assistant Director, Angela serves as the technical expert to the university community in building, authoring, and deploying surveys and in analyzing and reporting survey results. She also serves as the university-wide survey manager for the web-based Qualtrics Survey Software and for all COFHE surveys. Angela can be reached at ext. 5377 or apt1@rice.edu.

 

Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang Yuanyuan Zhang, Ph.D.:

Yuanyuan Zhang joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in June 2017. Before coming to Rice, she worked at the International Facility Management Association as a Market Researcher, where she conducted research to help define market opportunities and product strategies, and to support planning and decision-making of the organization. She was also responsible for writing benchmarking reports to support global needs of the facility management industry.

Dr. Zhang received her doctorate in Mass Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has extensive experience in quantitative and qualitative research. As Organizational Insight Analyst, Yuanyuan performs advanced and complex statistical work in support of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, communicates findings to various constituencies, and provides Rice with data for informed decision making. Photo of David ToombsDavid S. Toombs, BA:

David Toombs joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in August 2017. Before coming to OIE, he worked for Facilities Engineering & Planning as a Service Center Coordinator, where he provided administrative support to FE&P project managers and maintenance supervisors. He also handled communications for the department, which included drafting of campus notifications, social media posts and website maintenance. David began at FE&P in June 2012.

David graduated with a BA in English & Creative Writing from the University of Houston in December 2011. As Executive Assistant, David works with John and Angela to document and articulate Rice’s endeavors to meet SACS COC’s Principles of Accreditation. He also schedules meetings, manages calendars and organizational charts, and maintains the website. David can be reached at ext. 2064 or dst2@rice.edu.
